Shale barrens are on the west, central ridge, and east portions of a S-facing bowl-shaped hollow in the side of a ridge overlooking a narrow valley which includes Whipps Run. Surrounding forest type is very mixed: Va pine, hickory, white oak, black oak.;Fragmented. East section has been partially clear-cut. Some trees have already been cut; invasives present. Influence of road erosion etc.
